Duchess Marcia dropped a big black bag at our feet before leaving us alone in our quarters in the basement. It was nothing like the rest of the palace. The room was as tiny as an office cubicle that could only facilitate two persons. The walls, ceiling, and floor were made of very old bricks. It seemed as though we were no longer in the palace but rather in a poor ancient, abandoned house.
I found it very strange that the palaces floor was made of crystals, but the ceiling of the basement was made from different materials. There was no use trying to figure it out anyway. The Salumites were strange people. I didn know why I was expecting anything different about their inventions.
Nothing was in our quarters except for a bunk bed and a tin lamp sitting on the ground that seemed to be about forty years old. Its exterior was covered in rust, while its egg-shaped bulb was coated with dust. Thank God it was sensitive to the darkness.
The bunk beds were dusty and had no covering. I opened the bag hoping to find coverings inside. I was disappointed to find only six grey pieces of clothing. Instantly I knew they were our uniforms because they were identical to what the other maids were wearing.
Joanna sneezed several times. Usually, I would say, bless you, but not this time.
